We read the book Flat Stanley in class and then discussed what they will do with their flat teacher over Spring Break. They write about and illustrate their adventures with Flat Ms. Mellor over their vacation.
Working With Adjectives
For this project each student was given a piece of popcorn and asked to describe it in one unique word. Then we used these words to talk about how adjectives make writing more interesting.
Mystery Readers
Parental involvement is important in my classroom. In March, reading month, parents have a chance to come share their favorite stories with the class. The kids love to have their family members come in and read and to try and use the clues to figure out who it will be!
Celebrating Dr. Seuss
What would you do if Thing One and Thing Two came to your house? This was a writing piece the students did using their imagination. They though about what it might be like to live in the world of the Cat and the Hat and what they would do if they had to get rid on Thing One and Thing Two.
Visuals
I believe that young learners learn in many different ways. They learn what they see, what they hear, and what they do. Therefore I make sure that my classroom and the learning in it is a very visual place for students. Here is an alphabet song students learn and the visuals to go with it. This helps them with the letter identification, sound identification, and the use of it in reading and writing.
First Hand Learning
These are our class pets. We spend the spring watching these tadpoles make their transformation from a tadpole to a frog. The students love to watch them change each day and to see it not only in their books but first hand in their classroom.
Displaying Student Work
Students work hard and their work should be celebrated. I have a place in my room where students can display their writing pieces that they chose to publish. Since authors share their writing, and students are authors when they write, they should have a way to share their writing with others.
Celebrating Success: 100th day of School
Since counting, grouping, and working with tens is an important part of math in first grader we celebrate all of the learning we have done so far on the 100th day of school. Check out the great ideas students had to display 100 things!
Economics! Earning Money and Spending it at the Class Store
In this lesson students get to spend a month earning money by doing a job. LEARNING! When students follow class directions and behave in school, they are able to learn. Therefore, they are doing their job. At the end of the month students get to take their turn at being consumers by purchasing things with their hard earned money.
